The starfish story

A young boy was walking along the beach and came upon thousands of Starfishes which had been washed up during a terrible storm. When he came to each Starfish, he would pick it up and throw it back into the ocean. People watched him with amusement. He had been doing this for some time when a man approached him and said, “Little boy, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” The boy seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, he bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as he could into the ocean. The he looked up at the man and replied,

“Well, I made a difference to that one.”

On October 1st, 2012 Mission Starfish Haiti opened its doors to 172 students. When MSH opened, it provided education to children from kindergarten to third grade. Each year since, MSH has added a grade level in order for those students to continue their education and hopes to add a grade level each year until the school can offer kindergarten through ninth grade.

Mission Starfish Haiti is located in Gonaives, Haiti. Gonaives is a city of 300,000 people and is located about 80 miles north of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. In the past few years, Gonaives has been affected by many disasters including hurricanes and cholera out-breaks. As many as 250,000 out 400,000 residents lack food, housing and education.

There are currently 400 students attending the Mission Starfish Haiti schools and each year MSH strives to enroll a new set of Kindergarteners into the school. It is our goal to expand our reach and grow the number of students with every passing year. We hope to continue are work long into the future, and it is because of your generosity and sponsorships that we can succeed.
